Come, ye weary, heavy laden,
bruised and broken by the fall
If you tarry ’til you‘re better,
you will never come at all

The Mystery of Marriage

Ephesians 5:21-33

Other sermons from Ephesians

21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Wives and Husbands

22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. [1] 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Partial Transcript

We come this morning as we turn to Ephesians 5 the last to our series on Marriage; the last in our series on these, what is it, thirteen verses. After seven weeks, probably those of you who have been here through it all, you’ve probably got it half memorized by now you’ve heard it often enough. But we close by coming to verse 32. To the one part of this passage that everyone who is married instinctively understands. And most of us have been known to just cry out on our own after a, at the end of a hard day of being married, “This is a profound mystery.” So, hear once more our passage. Ephesians 5 starting in verse 21, running through the end of the chapter, verse 33, as we turn for one last time to look at the mystery of Marriage.

“Submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives submit to your husbands as to the Lord, for the husband is the head of of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is, his himself it’s savior. Now, as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that he might present the church to himself in splendor without spot or wrinkle or any such thing; that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way, husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself, for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes it and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of His body. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife, as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.” This is the word of God. [02:27]
